Web Design and Graphics - Online Course

This series presents concepts for designing and building Web sites. It covers how to plan the structure of a Web site, maintaining the Web site files, and considering the affect that various browsers, monitors, and systems can have on the display of a site. Strategies for making a site download quickly and display well across all browsers and systems are presented, along with creating color schemes, backgrounds, GIF transparencies, and image maps. Additional topics covered in this series include the use of HTML and graphics for formatting and layout, and other useful tools such as frames, animated GIFs, dynamic HTML, JavaScript, QuickTime, Flash, and Shockwave.

This series is for anyone who is interested in learning more about building a Web site or creating the graphics for a site. This online course contains 5 lessons and should take approximately 16 hours to complete.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Design (3.0) hours

Introduction to Design teaches you how to plan the structure of a Web site, maintain site files and refer to other pages within the site, explain the effect that different browsers can have on the display of a site, and explain the effect that different monitors and systems can have on the display of a site. This course explains the basic considerations used when designing a Web site, including the planning and maintenance of the site, and making the site accessible to all platforms and monitors. Topics include Planning a Site, Site Architecture and Maintenance, Displaying in Multiple Browsers, and Colors and Screen Sizes.

Lesson 2: Making Your Site Fast and Viewable (4.0) hours

Making Your Site Fast and Viewable teaches you how to explain the basic Web graphics formats and their best uses, trim graphics to make them as small as possible, and choose the right settings and treatments for scanned pictures. This course shows users how to make graphics that will download quickly on the Internet and will display well across all browsers and systems. Topics include Graphics Formats, Making Small Graphics, Trimming Size and Keeping Quality, and Scanning Images.

Lesson 3: Building Your Site with Images (3.0) hours

Building Your Site with Images teaches you how to select browser-safe colors for use on a Web site, choose effective color schemes, create background images, use transparency in GIFs, and build imagemaps. This course shows users how to create color schemes, backgrounds, GIF transparencies, and imagemaps for a Web site. Topics include Browser-Safe Color, Choosing Colors, Creating Backgrounds, Transparency in Images, and Imagemaps.

Lesson 4: Building Your Site with Formatting (3.0) hours

Building Your Site with Formatting teaches you how to explain basic typography terms and concerns, create fonts for a Web page, build lines, buttons, and bullets, and design pages using tables and graphics. This course shows users how to create fonts with HTML and graphics, and lay out a page using tools like lines, buttons, bullets, and tables. Lesson 5: Using Other Tools (3.0) hours

Using Other Tools teaches you how to use frames in a Web site, build animated GIFs, use dynamic HTML and JavaScript rollover code, and use QuickTime, Flash, and Shockwave within a Web site.
