Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Admin, Config, Install - Online Course

This series teaches learners how to install SQL Server 2000 and configure advanced options. The series also teaches learners how to manage databases and objects, create a disaster recovery plan, troubleshoot data integrity issues, extract and secure data, automate tasks, and optimize performance.

Lesson 1: Basic Concepts and Installation (2.0) hours

Basic Concepts and Installation teaches you how to understand basic database structure and terminology, identify basic requirements for installing the various editions of SQL Server 2000, select an installation type and desired components, understand the file path structure, identify the network libraries used for connection to an instance, and install a named instance. This course provides a brief review of database structure, implementation, and the basic databases within SQL Server 2000 installations. It also gives an overview of the available versions of SQL Server 2000 and their uses. The basic requirements for planning a SQL Server 2000 installation are presented. Topics include Database Basics, Client/Server Topologies, Editions and Installation Options, Instances and Components, Network Libraries and Collations, Services and Authentication, Installation Checklist, and Basic Installations.

Lesson 2: Advanced Installation (2.0) hours

Advanced Installation teaches you how to add and remove components, uninstall an instance of SQL Server 2000, perform a remote installation, create an unattended installation file for deployment on multiple servers, add and remove nodes from a virtual server, and perform SQL Server 2000 upgrades. This course covers basic installation procedures and options for both default and named instance installations of SQL Server 2000. Additional topics include advanced installation procedures, configuration options, and upgrade implementations of SQL Server 2000, all of which may be included on the certification exam. Topics include Subinstallations, Components, Remote installation, Unattended installation, Uninstalling SQL Server 2000, Failover Clustering, and Upgrading.

Lesson 3: Creating and Managing Databases (2.0) hours

Creating and Managing Databases teaches you how to plan proper data and log file placement for a new database, understand how to create and use filegroups, create and delete a database using GUI and command-line methods, restrict database access to Single-User Mode and restore normal access, perform Attach and Detach operations on a database, and use the Enterprise Manager to modify existing database objects, including tables, views and stored procedures. This course discusses the basic creation of databases and database objects within a SQL Server 2000 instance. The tools provided in SQL Server 2000 installations for creating these are the SQL Server Enterprise Manager, a graphical user interface (GUI) management tool, and the SQL Query Analyzer, allowing the option of either using templates or command-line methods. Additional topics include the maintenance of SQL Server 2000 databases and database objects using the SQL Server Enterprise Manager and command-line functions available in the SQL Query Analyzer utility. Topics include Basic Requirements, Creating and Deleting Databases, The CREATE and DROP DATABASE Commands, Creating Objects, Managing Databases, The ALTER DATABASE Command, and Managing Objects.

Lesson 4: Disaster Recovery and Data Integrity (2.0) hours

Disaster Recovery and Data Integrity teaches you how to recognize the differences among the three primary database backup types, plan database backup scheduling based on backup type and recovery model selection, determine when each of the three recovery methods should be used, identify the types of integrity found in database implementations, use SQL Server 2000 and Windows 2000 tools to troubleshoot transactions and perform integrity checks, and perform system monitoring using the SQL Profiler, Enterprise Manager, and Transact-SQL command-line actions. This course explains the processes used in backing up and restoring databases and database files within an instance of SQL Server 2000 using the SQL Server Enterprise Manager and the SQL Query Analyzer. Additional topics include troubleshooting transactions and options for checking data integrity using the SQL Server Enterprise Manager or the SQL Query Analyzer for command-line actions. Topics include Recovery Planning, Backups, Restoration, Data Integrity, Monitoring, and DBCC Statements.

Lesson 5: Extracting and Securing Data (2.0) hours

Extracting and Securing Data teaches you how to import data into a database using the insert and bulk insert commands, perform bulk imports, exports, and updates using the bcp utility, create and schedule DTS packages, create logins under Windows and SQL Server Authentication, grant, revoke, and deny connections rights and access permissions, and create and remove user-defined database roles. This course covers the use of bulk insertion and update tools including both command-line and graphical user interface tools, such as the Data Transformation Services (DTS) utility. Additional topics include SQL Server 2000 security modes, connection authentication, access authorization, and the assignment and revocation of permissions on a user and role basis. Methods employing the SQL Server Enterprise Manager, as well as command-line options for use within the SQL Query Analyzer, are emphasized. Topics include Importing Individual Records, Importing Multiple Records, The bcp Utility, Data Transformation Services, Distributed Data Operations, Authentication Basics, Creating and Managing Logins, Authorization Basics, and Creating and Managing Roles.

Lesson 6: Automation and Performance (2.0) hours

Automation and Performance teaches you how to manage a multiserver administration configuration, configure the SQL Server Agent, create automated Jobs, Alerts, and Operators, monitor system performance, create and use a performance baseline to identify performance variance, defragment indexes on tables and indexed views, and optimize bulk copy process performance. This course covers the capabilities included in SQL Server 2000 for automating routine tasks, allowing the database administrator to concentrate on development and tasks too complex for automation. Command-line options are available for most automation capabilities, but the graphical user interface (GUI) management tools access in the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager provides the most robust and rapidly deployed automation options. Additional topics include an overview of the tools and techniques for monitoring SQL Server 2000 operations and a discussion of some of the common SQL Server performance optimization considerations that are included in the exam. There are as many specific configurations for performance optimization as there are installations of SQL Server 2000. Topics include Automation basics, Administration agents, Creating automation components, Database maintenance planning wizard, Optimizing performance, Index defragmentation, and Bulk copy optimization.
