Visio 2002

This series introduces users to Microsoft Visio 2002, a powerful diagramming and drawing application that can be used to create business and technical diagrams. Learners will study the basics of the Visio 2002 interface and tools, explore the templates, stencils, and pre-defined shapes provided with Visio, and construct simple Visio diagrams.

This series is for users who have some familiarity with Windows applications and who want to get the most out of Visio 2002. This online course contains 10 lessons and should take approximately 36 hours to complete.

Using Tools, Commands, Custom Toolbars, and Menus

This course introduces users to the Visio 2002 user interface It explains how to open and save a new Visio file, how to choose a stencil containing predefined shapes, and how to add shapes from a stencil to your drawing It also provides an introduction to the drawing tools users can use to modify or connect shapes Finally, this course explains the options available on the Visio toolbars and shows users how to assemble custom toolbars that combine the tools they use most often and teaches you how to create a new drawing in Visio 2002, select a shape from a stencil and add it to a drawing, modify the shape using the drawing tools, size and position a shape, identify Visio 2002 toolbars, and use the Customize window to create custom toolbars and menus.

Working with Objects and Hyperlinks

This course explains Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), which can be used to place objects that were created with other programs into Visio drawings This course explains the difference between linking and embedding an object and shows users how to choose the best approach for their project It demonstrates how to place an existing object into a Visio drawing This course also explains how to use hyperlinks to direct users to files located elsewhere and teaches you how to define Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), choose whether to link or embed a foreign object in a Visio drawing, define a hyperlink, and create a hyperlink within a Visio drawing.

Using the Shape Menu

This course briefly reviews the drawing tools most frequently used in working with shapes It also shows the user how to modify shapes using the operations on the Shape menu These operations enable users to modify the alignment and orientation of shapes Users also learn how to use Shape menu operations to handle overlapping shapes and teaches you how to identify and use the Pointer, Connector, Connection Point, Line, Pencil, Rotation, Freeform and Arc tools, distinguish between open and closed shapes, use the Shape menu to perform shape operations that affect the alignment and orientation of shapes, and use the Shape menu to manage overlapping shapes.

Working with Shapes

This course shows users how to use the Find function to locate shapes on Visio stencils and how to create a new stencil including the shapes they need It also explains how to set shape behavior, which controls the way the shape is highlighted, resized, or printed with the document, and how the shape functions when grouped with other shapes and teaches you how to find a shape using basic and advanced search techniques, create a custom stencil, establish shape behavior settings using the Behavior tab of the Behavior dialog box, establish shape behavior using the Double-Click tab of the Behavior dialog box, and establish shape behavior using the Placement tab of the Behavior dialog box..

Defining and Using Styles, Custom Properties and Templates

This course explains how to define and apply styles, which are predefined formats that can be applied to multiple objects Users will also learn about ShapeSheets, spreadsheets which contain information about each shape in the drawing, and the procedures for modifying a ShapeSheet to include custom properties Finally, this course explains templates, which combine a drawing page with stencils and settings Users will learn how to use existing templates and create new templates that include the stencils and settings they need and teaches you how to define and apply a style, define custom properties for a shape, create a drawing using an existing template, and create a new template.

Working with Pages, Layers, and Stencils

This course explains how to make complex diagrams easier to construct and understand by adding pages and layers to break the diagram into multiple sections It also explains how to edit an existing stencil, how to create a new stencil master, and how to create new stencils based on that master Finally, it explains how to create a stencil that includes all the shapes from all the pages and layers of the user's document and teaches you how to create a multi-page Visio drawing, create a multi-layer Visio drawing, edit an existing stencil, create a new master stencil, create a new stencil based on the master, and create a document stencil.

Working with Data

This course explains how to use Visio to create charts, graphs, diagrams, and multipurpose forms by tying Visio charts to data sources Users will learn how to use Visio to create graphic representations of data in spreadsheet or database applications and teaches you how to use the shapes on the Charting Shapes stencil, create a marketing chart or diagram using shapes, borders, and titles, use an existing form or create a new form, identify the requirements for linking a data source to a Visio diagram, and link a Visio diagram with an outside data source.

Understanding ShapeSheets

This course explains in detail the role of the ShapeSheet, a collection of formulas and data that describe each shape It explains the relationship between a shape and its ShapeSheet and provides detailed descriptions of key sections of the ShapeSheet and teaches you how to explain the purpose of a ShapeSheet, display the ShapeSheet for an object, identify the sections of the ShapeSheet, and associate characteristics of a shape with the sections of the ShapeSheet that control them.

Working with Flowcharts

This course explains how to create models that depict flows for a variety of processes using templates in the Flowchart Solution These flow models represent processes ranging from financial audits to high-level business processes Users can also learn how to use more complex flowchart solutions to depict process and information flows within an information system model Finally, users will learn about the Integration Definition for Functional Modeling method (IDEF0), and how to implement it in Visio 2002 and teaches you how to identify the types of flowchart solutions provided with Visio 2002, create diagrams, such as audit diagrams, TQM diagrams, and Work Flow diagrams, that depict high-level business processes, create diagrams, such as data flow models, for use in system requirements definition, and create hierarchical models and diagrams using the IDEF0 method.

Creating Database Models

This course explains how to create database models that provide a visual representation of a database schema This course describes the stencils and templates users can use to draw database models and provides a detailed explanation of the process of drawing a database model It also explains how to use wizards that can extract a database model from an existing database and update that model when the database changes and teaches you how to identify the templates available in the database solution, create a database model using the Database Model Diagram template, create a Database Model Diagram based on an existing database, update a Database Model Diagram to reflect changes to an existing database, and explain how you can generate a physical database from a Database Model diagram.
