This series will provide you with the basic knowledge needed to administer IIS 6.
This series is for anyone who wants to learn to administer IIS 6. This online course contains 13 lessons and should take approximately 37 hours to complete.
Architecture and Features
This course provides an overview of the history of the IIS architecture It also describes the new features of IIS 6 and teaches you how to discuss improvements to IIS, identify the main core processes used by IIS 6, identify the purpose of worker processes, list some components of application pools, and describe the types of isolation modes.
Installation
This course explains the importance of understanding how you plan to use IIS 6 It also covers the variety of ways IIS 6 can be installed on your computer and teaches you how to understand and plan the installation of IIS 6, install IIS 6 from the product CD, add additional IIS 6 components after installation, and explain other ways of installing IIS 6.
Administration
This course provides an overview of the tools used to administer IIS 6 and other aspects of Windows Server 2003 and teaches you how to identify administration methods for IIS 6, describe IIS Manager functionality, perform general administration tasks on IIS machines, and install Windows Server 2003 administrative tools on a workstation.
Remote Administration
This course provides you with the tools you need to enable your Web server to allow secure, remote connections and to enable you to administer your server from anywhere and teaches you how to identify the function and components of Remote Desktop, open a Remote Desktop connection, use the Remote Desktops console feature of Windows Server 2003, use Remote Desktop Web Connection on Internet Explorer, and identify the function of the Remote Administration (HTML) tool.
Creating and Configuring Web Sites
This course explains how to create and configure Web sites on IIS 6 machines, and how to use virtual directories to host Web site content and teaches you how to configure the Default Web Site, set the location of Web site content, create virtual directories, set a default document, work with MIME types, and use the Web Site Creation Wizard.
Creating and Configuring Applications and FTP Sites
This course explains how to create and configure applications and FTP sites on IIS 6 machines and teaches you how to prepare IIS for hosting, creating, and configuring applications, install and configure the Default FTP site, and discuss the advance configuration of FTP sites.
Security
This course provides information about IIS security topics, focusing on the security of Web sites that host both static and dynamic content and teaches you how to set NTFS and Web permissions, select and configure an authentication method, define IP address and domain name restrictions, enable security for dynamic Web applications, and use Secure Socket Layer (SSL ) technology to secure IIS.
Working from the Command Line
This course provides an overview of administering IIS 6 from the command line and teaches you how to differentiate between the various methods for command line administration, implement Telnet to run IISReset from a remote IIS machine, demonstrate basic IISReset functionality, explain the procedures for managing Web sites on a server, describe the tasks for administering virtual directories, and recognize the methods for managing FTP sites, their virtual directories, applications, and Web service extensions.
Performance Tuning and Monitoring
This course provides information on the various settings you can tune to help IIS 6 and its application pools run more efficiently and teaches you how to tune IIS and application pools for maximum performance, choose Windows registry and Metabase settings, select settings that will improve the performance of ASP, and use performance monitoring tools.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
This course provides details about how to identify several types of HTTP status codes, substatus codes, and error messages; enable and configure Web logging on your IIS 6 machine; and solve common problems that prevent user access to your Web sites and teaches you how to identify the types of HTTP status codes and messages, recognize the use of HTTP substatus error codes, identify the uses of Web logging, enable and configure Web logging on your IIS machine, identify the use of event logs, review event logs using Event Viewer, and solve common problems that prevent user access to your Web sites.
Working with the Metabase
IIS 6 holds configuration information in a set of XML files collectively called the metabase The metabase retains all of your global IIS settings, and the settings for each individual Web site running on IIS You can adjust IIS settings using the IIS Manager or by editing the metabase directly and teaches you how to recognize what the metabase is and what it does, identify and adjust keys within the metabase, back up and restore copies of the metabase, edit a metabase file, and recover from corrupt metabase configurations.
SMTP and NNTP
This course provides information about using the NNTP and SMTP services provided with IIS 6 and teaches you how to install the SMTP and NNTP services, describe how to configure the SMTP service for your system, and describe how to configure the NNTP service.
Publishing
This course provides information about publishing and managing content using IIS 6 and teaches you how to differentiate between WebDAV and FTP for publishing and managing content on Web servers, enable WebDAV and a client to support it, identify the main issues related to configuring WebDAV, install FrontPage Server Extensions of IIS, enable FrontPage Server Extensions so Web sites on your server can support FrontPage clients, and configure various aspects of how FPSE works on your site.
